Friends of the Library — Summer is quite the adventure

Summer is one of my favorite times of the year. The kids get to stay up later and have campfires, s’mores and catch the fire flies. For many, it is time to go on vacation and explore new places. This summer, the Kilgore Memorial Library is waiting to have adventures with you during the summer reading program. We have so many things for all ages.

Kickoff of the Summer Reading is June 1, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Get everyone in the family signed up and have lunch at the library.

Our weekly lineup of activities looks like this: on Tuesdays, there will be Book Buddies at 10 a.m.; on Wednesdays, elementary students will have the opportunity to learn about different holidays around the world at 10 a.m.; on Thursdays, we will have special events for tweens/teens and families. Farmers’ Market is back at the library from 5-7 p.m., on Thursday evenings. Come to our booth and learn about different cultures in our community. Then, on Fridays, preschoolers are invited to join Mrs. B. at 10 a.m., for story time and crafts about the different climates and ecosystems in our world. There will also be Gaming with Tyler on Fridays from 2-4 p.m. All of these will take place June 1-12.

For the adults, we will have our annual Reading Smackdown. This is a fun summer challenge for the adults of the York and Seward Libraries to learn, “who reads more on Highway 34.” This program runs through July 26. All types of reading counts. Visit our website for all the details on how to join this fun summer reading challenge.

Special events for our teens/tweens, will be a puzzle competition on June 6 from 10 a.m. until noon.

July 6, we will have escape rooms starting at 10 a.m. Teens/tweens can bring their best creative designs for Cupcake Wars between 10 a.m. and noon. Please register your team on our website: libraries.ne.gov/york.

We have some fun activities for families beginning June 13 at 10:30 a.m., when Wildlife Encounters from Omaha joins us to teach us about some animals from around the world. On June 20 at 10:30 a.m., Nebraska Games and Parks will bring some reptiles of Nebraska to the library. On June 27, we will explore space with Edgerton Explorit Center at 10 a.m. Thank you, Collins Aerospace for helping us bring Edgerton Science to Kilgore Memorial Library.

The finale for the Summer Reading Program will be July 12. Please come join us at Kilgore Memorial Library for a summer of adventures.
