Brumbaugh presented 2024 Heart of CASA Award

YORK — Phyllis Brumbaugh of Bradshaw was presented the 2024 Heart of CASA Award by CASA by York County Executive Director Elizabeth Hain at the 2024 Volunteer Appreciation Banquet held Thursday, April 18, at the Mackey Center on the York University campus.

In honoring Brumbaugh, Hain said, “The Heart of CASA Award is granted to an individual who embodies the mission of CASA, goes above and beyond in all facets of their role, and has made a substantial impact to the program and the children they serve.”

Hain noted Brumbaugh was and is, “a veteran of CASA for York County,” and added, “early on she showed me what an exemplary CASA volunteer looked like, and she acted as the model for which I strived to empower all of our other volunteers to emulate.”

Over the course of nearly a decade, Brumbaugh has worked with seven children, many of whom filtered in and out of the system.

Hain was particularly impressed with Brumbaugh’s ability to connect with the mother on the longest of her cases. Even though this mother fell short time and time again, she always showed up for her and checked in. Even though this mother showed rage at everyone in the system, she always had a soft spot for her children’s CASA. Because of Brumbaugh’s advocacy, she helped six of these seven children achieve permanency; and is on track to do the same with her current case.

Hain stated, “Not only does Brumbaugh show a deep care for the children she works with, but she cares for the CASA office as a whole,” and truly has a heart for CASA.
