Construction contract accepted for turf/stadium project at Levitt Stadium, East Hill Park

YORK – A construction contract with Mammoth Sports Construction LLC has been approved for the major improvements to be made at Levitt Stadium at East Hill Park.

The York City Council already approved the project as part of this fiscal year’s budget process and they approved bonding for the project with the payments to be made from LB 357 funds.

LB 357 funds are generated by the city’s extra ½-cent sales tax which is used for specially earmarked projects such as this.

The contract is worth $2.8 million with a $100/day liquidated damage clause if the project is not substantially completed by Aug. 9.

“You already approved this project, now we are at the construction phase,” York Public Works Director Cheree Folts told the city council.

York Public Schools Superintendent Mitch Bartholomew, who sits on the LB 357 Committee (as the schools are involved with the city when it comes to prioritizing and recommending LB 357 projects) said he wanted to thank Folts and York City Administrator Sue Crawford for their work on this project. He also noted how new bleachers will be installed (not on the turf) to provide plenty of seating for home and visiting fans. Folts said the old bleachers will be used at the soccer fields, so they will be used.

The project will include a new exterior fence and baseball dugouts.

“It’s a neat project for the city, the school and the university,” Folts said. “It’s hard to provide maintenance to a facility which never sleeps as it is constantly in use – this turf will really help.”
