Heartland School bond issue will be on Primary Election ballot; informative public meetings scheduled

HENDERSON – Heartland Community School will have a bond issue on the Primary Election ballot in May; prior to the election, patrons will have multiple opportunities to attend informative meetings.

According to Superintendent Jeremy Klein, as he wrote in the district’s March newsletter to patrons, “As many of our patrons know, a comprehensive facilities project was initiated in late 2021 with a bond campaign to finance additions and renovations of our existing PK-12 facilities and site. Costs for completing the project, however, ultimately exceeded the financing provided by the 2022 bond campaign and statutory changes in school funding have eliminated some options for funding the project’s completion.

“Seeing how the facilities project is a needs-driven endeavor, completing the comprehensive facilities project in its entirety remains a goal for the board of education,” Klein continued. “To finance the completion of the comprehensive facilities project, the board will hold an election seeking voter approval for the issuance of bonds as a means for securing the funds necessary for completing the project.”

The bond election will coincide with the statewide Primary Election, which will be held on Tuesday, May 14. Like the bond election which was held in May of 2022, a simple majority of votes cast is required for passage of the bond initiative.

“At its regular February board meeting, the board of education passed a resolution to call for the election seeking voter approval for the issuance of general obligation bonds in an amount not to exceed $6,850,000,” Klein explained. “The board’s resolution was then filed with the election commission shortly after its passage by the board.”

Over the next few weeks, leading up to the Primary Election, additional information will be made available on the district’s website, Klein said. “Additionally, the board of education will hold a series of special meetings for the purpose of sharing information with the public and answering questions.”

He said the following tentative meetings have been set:

  • Monday, March 18, at 7 p.m., at the Bradshaw Community Center
  • Monday, March 25, at 7 p.m., at the Heartland Community Schools Theater
  • Monday, April 15, with the time to be announced, at the Bradshaw Community Center
  • Monday, April 29, with the time to be announced, at the Heartland Community Schools Theater
