The award was presented to owner Carlee Carter during the annual York Chamber of Commerce banquet.

Those who nominated the business for the award said Carter “purchased an existing childcare business a few years back. She recognized the need for more space to accommodate all ages. In the last few years, she rented a satellite location because her existing families were growing and she needed space to care for infants. In addition to recognizing the need for infant care, she was listening to her parents on how transporting children to and from preschool was a problem. She went to work, purchased a van and now she transports children to preschool regardless of what childcare facility they go to.”

The Little Cubs story started in August of 2017. The business started as an in-home daycare – Carter and Paige McKenzie cared for 12 children in Carter’s home.

Then in 2018, Carter expanded into a childcare center, serving 42 kids.

In 2022, they opened a small second location serving 12 infants while keeping the current location operating at full capacity. They also added preschool transportation to the list of services. A lot of the preschool programs in York area operate 2 ½ to 4 hours during the day, so adding this service allows for parents to continue to work during the day while still making sure their child gets to school and back to daycare.

In 2023, with the help of state grant money for childcare expansion, they renovated the basement of the First Lutheran Church and moved their second location there. Today, they serve a total of 90 children in the York community and provide preschool transportation for over 30 children.

In 2023, Carter began working on opening a third location of Little Cubs Daycare which will be in Seward. They are projected to open in the first quarter of this year.
