This year, during the 2024 York Chamber of Commerce Banquet, the award was given to Dr. Clark Roush, “who has been instrumental in researching, supporting and spreading the word about making York a Creative Art District. He went above and beyond to reach various demographics in this area,” say those who nominated him.

Dr. Roush has a 37-year career of excellence in the arts. He serves as Endowed Chair of Performing Arts at York University. “He generously assists community, church and school choirs and frequently serves as a guest conductor. He serves on the Nebraska Arts Council board and has served on boards of the Nebraska Music Education Association and the Nebraska Choral Directors Association,” said one person who nominated him. “He also contributes to arts education through performances. Dr. Roush’s lifetime career of services to arts education in his university, local community and the state are well deserving of this award.”

A nominator said, “Just as I was wondering how we would be able to find the momentum to complete the preparations for Creative District designation, Dr. Roush walked into my office and volunteered to lead the application efforts. His passion for the arts and his commitment to inclusion provided the needed boost for us to generate new community conversations about the arts with diverse groups of individuals. He took the lead in gathering groups of different cohorts who were not engaged in public discussions about the arts previously and lead them through discussions of how we could as a community better incorporate their talents and interests. He continues to provide leadership in these efforts as we move to the next phase of our designation work.

“Dr. Roush currently serves as the Endowed Chair of Performing Arts at York University. This endowed position testifies to York University’s recognition of his contributions to arts education. His impact on arts in the York community and in the state extend beyond this important foundational work of developing artists who attend York University. He is also generous with his time in assisting community, church and school choirs and frequently serves as a guest conductor or adjudicator throughout the state. Overall, he has been leading choirs for 37 years. As just one recent example, this past December he directed community Christmas musical performances for the Yorkshire Playhouse,” nominators continued.

“Dr. Roush’s commitment to arts education includes service on the Nebraska Arts Council board, and past service on the boards of the Nebraska Music Education Association and Nebraska Choral Directors Association. He has given a keynote address at three Nebraska Music Education Association conferences,” they said.

“Dr. Roush continues to contribute to arts and arts education through performances as well. One notable mention are of his performances with the Omaha Symphony Chamber,” those who nominated said further.

“His impact in our community, York Nebraska extends beyond his work with York University to include many years of work with community members that continues now. His excellence in arts education in the state of Nebraska is evidenced by his leadership in arts associations and requests from various state organizations for his services. His continuing energetic service to the arts in his university, his local community and the state of Nebraska are well deserving of this award.”
