York man killed in crash near Maxwell

YORK – According to Cody Thomas, spokesperson for the Nebraska State Patrol, a 19-year-old man from York was killed in a crash on Interstate 80 near Maxwell on Saturday.

Thomas says at approximately 11:50 p.m., the NSP was dispatched to a single vehicle crash. Troopers arrived and found a Toyota pickup on its side in the westbound lanes with bystanders providing aid to an unresponsible person who had been ejected from the vehicle. A trooper, Thomas said, utilized an AED in an attempt to revive the person.

The person, who had been a passenger in the pickup, was identified as Bernardo Jimenez Benavidez of York. He was transported to Great Plains Hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The three other occupants of the pickup were also transported to the hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries. Preliminary investigation shows that the eastbound pickup lost control during winter driving conditions, rolled and came to rest in the westbound lanes.

The crash remains under investigation.
