It’s pumpkin time at St. Joe’s

YORK – It’s that time of year again – pumpkin time – at the St. Joseph Catholic School as they get ready for the great pumpkin sale of 2023.

On Tuesday morning, Sept. 19, students, staff and parents traveled to the Morner farm by Waco where they picked a massive amount of colorful pumpkins (and gourds) until they couldn’t pick any more.

The fun outdoor activity was also a little bit of work – but it is all worth it as the pumpkins will be sold to the public later this week and the funds will greatly benefit the private school.

The Morner family/St. Joseph pumpkin partnership started six years ago and has become a York tradition ever since. The annual pumpkin sale has become a tradition of sorts and the pumpkins go fast each year.

Patty Morner, whose family came up with the idea of donating their pumpkins for this purpose, remembers how the “first year, it was just very spontaneous and there was only one trailer. It has fortunately continued to grow from there.”

Diane Fletcher, a teacher at St. Joseph’s says every year, “it is so much fun to watch the excitement of the kids on harvest day. They truly look forward to harvest each year. The students do the work that day – picking the pumpkins, washing them, sorting them and then loading them on trailers. We also help the Morner family by clearing the patch. On the day of the sale, the kids help unload, set up, help with the sale and serve others by loading pumpkins in the car if our customers need additional help.”

The proceeds from the pumpkins have helped in so many ways. Fletcher said, “We have used the funds from the sale to update our band instruments. St. Joseph provides instruments for all students as they begin band to use while they are at St. Joseph. Many of our instruments need to be replaced, so this has been a wonderful way for us to replenish our supply. To date, we have been able to purchase two trumpets, a saxophone and a trombone. This year, we hope to update our percussion section and maybe one more trumpet.

“We also use the funds to help with the cost of a fun activity for the entire school during for the entire school during Catholic Schools Week,” Fletcher said. “One favorite activity is purchasing some items for an Adopt A Family family during the Christmas season. This past year, we were able to purchase some of the carnival games to help with the fall festival we are trying this week.”

The pumpkin sale will take place Friday, Sept. 22, from 3:30-6:30 p.m., at the St. Joseph School.
