Man caught with large amount of meth in York County

YORK – A California man caught with a large amount of methamphetamine in York County has pleaded not guilty.

John Wayne Dougherty, 43, of Oroville, California, was arraigned in York County District Court this past week.

The case began when a trooper with the Nebraska State Patrol was on regular duty on Interstate 80 when he saw a motorist drive onto the shoulder and then the trooper found the registration was suspended.

A traffic stop was initiated, in York County.

The driver was Elizabeth Ochoa and Dougherty was a passenger.

Dougherty said the vehicle belonged to him and the trooper said it appeared Dougherty was attempting to conceal something from his sight, while they were talking, according to court documents.

During a search of the vehicle, troopers found multiple small bags containing methamphetamine, three used syringes and a glass pipe with methamphetamine residue.

The total amount of methamphetamine they found weighed 8.3 grams.

A jury trial has been scheduled for later this year.
